Showed up late

So, I missed Gabe because my lazy ass can't seem to get to the meeting place on time, oh well. Today I only had a short while to sketch so this is what I got...

early start on the new year of SKETCH CLUB!

Well, I just got back from the last sketch day of 2007! I am considering it an early start on the 2008 year. I am posting some sketches from a couple fo weeks ago as well while I was at the group with Dan Burgess.

I got to the Mall around 11:10 this morning and started sketching. I have been feeling a little under the weather from all the traveling and excitement of Christmas vacation and so I left after about an hour of sketching. So I am sorry if I missed anybody who may have shown up after me.

There was an email in my inbox from Lee White this morning concerning the sketch group. Lee is the official facaulty advisor from the Art Institute for the Sketch Group. Along with with his excitement for being a part of the group this term he also had some suggestions.

"One thing, maybe while you are out there, give yourself a few things to concentrate on in addition to people. Maybe try to capture a cool store front or a interesting group of cars parked in a row (not so easy to draw). This will add some new depth to what you guys have been drawing in the past. "

Good stuff.

Can't wait for next week!

Get things rolling.

Hope everybody has had or is having a great Christmas vacation. I am back in town from my vacation and am ready to return to the old sketching routine.

I will be in the Pioneer Square Mall in front of the GAP store at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning.

There was a lot of interest in the sketch group from the Art Institute faculty this past term that I hope will bring about some positive changes within the group, including locations, subject matter, and instructions and critique from some of the AI staff.

Met up with Gabe and we hit the
Pioneer Court house... more or less walked through it
actually and quickly assessed that it was way too cold in the shade and moved to the mall.
Santa was in town which was good for us because lots of people were sitting still and standing in line, people kept getting in the way of santa though so no sketches of the Man from me. I really need to make it down more often, lifes crazy.
Good luck with Finals everyone!

Might be my last one this year

So, I may not get to get out much until the new year, maybe once before Christmas, we'll see. Anyhow, here is what I got outta last Sat...

Pre-Christmas madness at the mall

I was a bit late today and I only stayed for an hour but it was good times. lots of people around and I sat next to some folks that were trying to relax while their families or friends or whoever they were there with shopped. Eventually one of them left and I was joined by some random kid who said that he sketches in the mall everyday, so that was cool. The best part though was that some carolers stopped in my general area and I finally got to draw people who weren't moving all over the place :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hope everybody had a good Holiday. Mine was great, thank you. For those of you who are hard core and are still planning on hitting up the sketch group tomorrow we are going to meet in front of the GAP in the Pioneer Square Mall. It has been mighty cold lately, not to mention the possibility of rain and I am trying to get over a cold.

The mall should be bussling with people tomorrow. good sketching is a given! See you there! 11:00 am!

Another rainy Sat-er-day

So I sat-on-my-ass at the mall and drawed stuff :) The funniest part about today was that the security guard spotted me and moved as soon as he saw that I was drawing him. Then he came down the escalator and walked right behind me, probably looking to see if I really was drawing him. After that he kind of gave me dirty looks any time I saw him again. Ha ha, good times

Sketch Group Nov 17th

Looks like the rain is not going to end any time soon. So the group will be meeting at standby, at the benches in front of the GAP store in the Pinoneer Mall.

In the works is a notification mass email to be sent to all members every Friday informing them of meeting places, etc.

Regretably I will not be sketching tomorrow as I have to work. Got to pay them bills! Gary has given my word tonight that he will keep the sketch club torch aloft.

Saturday at home :(

So I wasn't able to get out last sat. and I decided to make up for it by pausing a video and sketching...

Go BIC pens

Once again the weather turned out nice for the sketch group. The group consisted of myself and one Alex Jetter who is a fellow school chum at the Art Institute.

Since I favorite sketching pen broke I used a standard black BIC medium point ball pen. I've always considered these cheap BIC's to be the funnest to sketch with.

We sketched at the square for about an hour before hopping on the max and sketching the riders up the Lloyd center and back. After sketching people moving around at the square it is really nice to sketch people riding on the max where they are not able to move, and they are closer to you.

Tomorrow

A few moments ago I walked into the open drawing class only to find it empty. My guess is that the model didn't show and the session was canceled.

For those of you who were unable to scratch their itch to draw tonight then I am sure that tomorrow's sketch group meet will be just the thing.

If the weather is nice we will meet at the square. If it is bad we will meed at the benches in front of the GAP inside the mall.

See you there!

Good times, Gabe gave me a call at 11 letting me know he'd be a little late, good thing because i was still in bed :P :)
It started out pretty quiet at the Square but then a large group of protesters showed up, Turkish or Kurdish.. something about Peace yes War No. Unfortunately the chants sounded like "Peace yes Porno!) or "Peace not Sparta" *shrug* Good time though, did some more MAX sketching to finish off the day as well. Good times.

*edit* hm i'll try to up the image size for future posts.

Nice Weather

This morning the sketch group met at Pioneer Square. The weather was nice, though a little bit on the chilly side. We spent about an hour sketching the people there and then decided to hop on the max and head up to Lloyd Center and back.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy Max sketching. I am still using an ink pen in an effort to sketch quickly and gain control of my lines. It has been nerve wracking but I am starting to feel more comfortable with it.

The group sketched a lot of the same marks so it will be fun to see all of our different takes on them when Dan and Gary get their sketches posted on here.

Saturday's Spoils

I think these images might come in a little small, but I had better just post it since it is already Thursday and the new sketch meet is just a couple of days away.

I got quite a few pages of sketching done, all done with ball point pen and probably spending about 5 seconds on each one. I am still trying to get movement and motion in just a few lines. It has been a frustrating but rewarding process.

If the weather is bad again on Saturday then the group will be meeting at the same place as last week. On the benches in front of the GAP store in the Pioneer Square Mall.

See you there!

First Sketch

Today was officially the first sketch meet of the new term at school. The weather was nice and warm and there were a lot of things going on around Pioneer Courthouse Square. It is a fantastic place to sketch.

Gary, a new member of the sketch group and a Media Arts and Animation major at the AI stopped by to sketch. Hope to see his sketches up here soon. Above are a couple pages from todays sketch book. I have been using a ball point ink pen lately. I am trying to become more comfortable and loose with my line work. Peace.

Sunny

The weather is getting better, and so is the sketching. Had a good time at the pioneer courthouse square this morning. My friend and fellow student at the art institute came along to take part in the sketching goodness. Here are a couple of images from today with a little bit of photoshoop added just for kicks.

Drawing Interupted

Even when the weather is not so great the drawing is still good. I saw some interesting faces on the max this morning on the way down town. Unfortunately a lot of them always seemed to be staring at me when I was about to draw them. When I got to Pioneer Square it was overcast but there were still people out and about to be drawn. I little while into it I started drawing a man leaning against a pillar, he noticed I was drawing him and came over to chat. Turns out he was from the Philippines and he was quite excited to find out that I spoke his language. His name is Rudy and has lived in the portland area for the past 30 years or so. Originally he is from the Pangasinan province of the philippines. He spends a lot of his time at the Square playing chess near the Max Stop.

We chatted it up for about and hour discussing religion, philosophy, and the likes. At one point a guy game up and gave me use some of those bible tracts, you know, those little pamphlets that tell you that you are going to hell. This got Rudy all heated up and he proceded to argue with the guy for the next 30 minutes or so. I sat and listened. Good times. And to think I would have missed all this if I had not gone to the PDX Sketch group this morning. I think I say another Art Institute student walk buy with a sketch book during Rudy's discussion. I don't know if he was there to draw or just on his way to class.

When it began to rain I said good bye and hopped back on the Max to go home. I got a little bit of drawing in so I will post it. Looking forward to next week.

Nice Day

yesterday was a nice day down at the square. I suppose this was officially the first day of the sketch group for the current term at the Art Institute.

As far as I know I was the only one there. True to form I was a few minutes late getting there and arrived around 11:30. There was a walk-a-thon thing going on there so they place was full of people. I hung around for about an hour of good drawing before heading back on the Max and going home, I probably would have stayed longer but I was not feeling all that well. And it really is a lot more fun when others show up to join in the drawing fun.

Hope to see some people out there next week.

Rain or Shine.

Due to Institute Day the Friday open life drawing session at AIPD will not be happening tonight and I am eager to do some non-class related drawing. There is a 50/50 chance or crappy weather tomorrow. If it is nice I will be drawing at the Square downtown @ 11:00, if it is raining then I will be just down the street in the Pioneer Courthouse Mall drawing at the usual meeting place on the lower level. Hope to see some of you out there tomorrow.

Bum deal

Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day in the Portland Oregon area. I was excited to spent Saturday morning down in the square sketching and watching people. Of course the weather did not stay that way, and today has been full of rain and clouds. Hence I did not make it go to the sketch club meet this morning. I apologize to anybody who might have shown up to find me missing. Hopefully the sun will be shiny and bright next Saturday and there will be mad sketching opportunities.

I always try to sketch people on the max whenever I am on my way to school unless it is full and I have to stand up. Here is one of the people I sketched on the way to school yesterday.

PDX Sketch is still alive.

So, I missed last Saturday, I hope somebody still made it out. If you did, we would all like to see your sketches. So sign up and post them. Finals week has come and gone and I am now spending my spring break at Disney Land (very cool). I still need to post my sketches from a week ago, I will get those up as soon as I get home. I will be at Pioneer Square the first Saturday in April, hope to see you all there!

Saturday, March 17, 2007

Hoorah, i'm here

Well hey hey, i have no idea if i'm doing this right but hopefully you all can see the sketches. Haven't been doing nearly enough life drawing so this group is gonna be awsome. enjoy all.

Greetings,

This was my first week attending the sketch group. The possibilities are fantastic at Pioneer square, the variety and quantity of people are excellent. Included are my sketches for the week.

Saturday

This Saturday was a little rainy. I got to the square at a little after 11:00 and quickly scanned the area for any other pdxsketch artist bust as usually could not see any. So I hopped back on the max line and took it to the end of the line at Hillsboro and then back to the Beaverton Transit Center. Here are this weeks sketchest for you to take a look at.

Friday, February 23, 2007

I won't be there.

Just a note for anybody who might attend the sketch group tomorrow. I will not be there this Saturday the 24th due to an academic meeting I will be attending. A couple students at the AIPD said they would carry the torch so to speak and show up for the sketch group, so if you do show up to the square tomorrow, just look around for others with sketch books. Also, if you show up, email me so I can authorise you to post your work on the blog.

2nd week

It was a sunny beautiful day in Downtown Portland at the square. I got there a little late this morning and scanned the area for anybody who might be carrying a sketch book, but found nobody. So as far as I know it was just me again at the weekly pdx sketch meet. It was fun regardless.

There were a lot of people out today enjoying the sun. I came to a few conclusions. I really like sketching on the max because your subjects can't get up and walk away while you are drawing them, the downside is that it is kind of hard to draw while the trains is bumping around. But on sunny days like today, people will stand or sit in the square for long periods of time.

I am including a few pages from my sketch book today. The frustrating part is not being able to draw at the level that I really think I should be. But that is what the weekly sketch meet is for. IMPROVEMENT. I really hope to some others will join up.

I would also like to state that I am not liable if somebody gets upset at you for drawing them. If somebody looks irritated stop drawing them. I have yet to even have anybody say anything negative to me. I try not to make it too obvious that I am drawing them. I particularly enjoy drawing people who are dozing of on the train because you can stare at them all you want.
